OBITUARY: Northeast Iowa Times, July 29, 1909:
Jonathan W. Adney, born May 11, 1833 (s/b 1832 per family records compiled by John R. Adney) at Vinton, Ohio, died at West Union, Iowa on June 16, 1909. Deceased went to Missouri when about 20 years of age. There he met and married Miss Sarah Scurlock in 1854. Five children were born to this union, a son and a daughter who are living in Arkansas (where their mother died), a daughter in Duluth and a son in South Dakota. One son died. Later he married Mrs. Matilda Bowder in Dakota.

In 1862 he enlisted in the Civil War, Company K, 31 Reg. Wis. Inf. The hardships he endured while there are supposed to be the cause of his long and painful illness. He had made his home in (13) different states, but the choice of all for a home was Iowa. He came to West Union from Hastings, Minnesota, on the 5th of May, and was much pleased with his surroundings and the pleasant people, but it was there but a few days when he was taken worse and the end came six weeks later. He was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery there, the funeral services being conducted under the auspices of the G.A.R. post of that place. His faithful wife has gone to St. Paul to live with one of their daughters.

His surviving brothers and sisters are Daniel W. Adney of Soldiers Grove, Wisc.; John T. Adney, Mrs. F. M. (Filinda) McMillin, and Mrs. E. C. (Esther) St. John of McGregor.
