Thelma Lula (Ruroden) Patrick, the daughter of Adolph and Randina “Rose” (Odegard)Ruroden, was born March 11, 1923 near Gunder, Iowa. She was made a Child of God through Holy Baptism in 1923 and was confirmed at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. Thelma attended rural schools in the Elgin and Gunder areas, graduating from the eighth grade. On January 31, 1943, Thelma was united in marriage to Harold H. Patrick at the home of Edmund and Bena Lauer in West Union by the Rev. B.W. Ukena. Four children, Sharron, Larry, Rosalita and Dean were born to this union. The couple spent their married life in the Elgin and Hawkeye areas. Thelma was a homemaker and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother. Together with her husband, Harold, Thelma owned and operated the Skyline Café in Hawkeye for several years.

Thelma died of cancer on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner at the age of eighty-four years and five months.

Thelma is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, Harold, of Hawkeye, Iowa; two daughters, Sharron Erickson of Hawkeye, and Rosalita (Allan) Berns of Winthrop, Iowa; two sons, Larry (Kathi) Patrick of Shell Rock, Iowa, and Dean (LaVonne) Patrick of West Union, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Irene Ruroden of Monona, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Kenneth, Maynard, Alvin, Clarence, Merlin, and Tillman Ruroden; three sisters, Renetta Larson, Myrtle Osmundson, and Violet Barker; a son-in-law, Robert Erickson; and a great granddaughter, Bobbi Lynn Erickson.
