Leona C. Wilkie Smith, 81, of Ionia, Iowa, formerly of Hawkeye, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye. The Rev. William Horn and the Rev. Laura Smith officiated.

Interment was in Dunham Grove Cemetery, rural Randalia. Casket bearers were Lavern Koch, Jim Welter, John Derr, Stan Feuchtwanger, Jim Mehmen, and Kenneth Peake.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Hawkeye, handled the arrangements.

Leona C. Wilkie Smith, daughter of Allen and Cleo Warner Bates, was born March 26, 1928, in Oelwein.

She received her education in the country schools near Oelwein and Lima.

On Oct. 30, 1946, Leona was wed to Clarence Gager. Three children were born to this union. The couple were later divorced.

On Aug. 7, 1971, Leona was married to Lee Wilkie and later divorced.

She was united in marriage with Carl Smith on Nov. 14, 1998, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Leona worked at Patrick's Restaurant and Diane's Restaurant in Hawkeye. At one time she also worked at restaurants in Oelwein and did housekeeping for some Oelwein residents.

Leona had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye and the United Methodist Church in Frederika.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson; three sisters, Laura Astor, Shirley Krum, and Betty Lou Bates; a brother, Charles Bates; and a half brother, Walter Bates.

In addition to her husband, Carl, of Eichorn House in Waverly, Leona is survived by a son, John (Lucy) Gager Sr. of Farmersburg; two daughters, Doris (David) Ohm of Penitas, Texas, and Diane (Dan) Pischke of Hawkeye; a stepson, Steve (the Rev. Laura) Smith of Cedar Rapids; five stepdaughters, Carol Smith of Waterloo, Sharon (Leon) Harms of Wellsburg, Karen Smith of Waterloo, Kathy (Bill) Kurth of Coralville, and Joyce (Michael) Flynn of Cologne, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roy (Anna) Bates of Waterloo.
