Robert A. Nims, 62, of Clermont, Iowa, died peacefully at his home Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, following a 15-month battle with leukemia.

Military funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at West Clermont Church, Clermont, with the Rev. Ryan Zurbriggen and the Rev. Dwight Albers officiating. Burial followed in God's Acres Cemetery, Clermont.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Allen Nims was born Nov. 10, 1946, to Frank and Olga (Fretheim) Nims Jr.

He attended Valley High School, Elgin, where he focused on sports more so than academics. Bob played football and broke in the new football field by scoring the very first touchdown on it; he was eventually crowned Homecoming King. He played basketball in the winter to stay in shape to catch for the baseball team in the summer.

Bob served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Germany for a time, where he was a proud member of the "Hell, Yeah" championship flag football team.

After being honorably discharged, he returned to the States.

Bob was united in marriage with Luann Gunderson on May 24, 1975, at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, where he was an active member. Their love resulted in two sons.

All his life, Bob lived and breathed the farm where he grew up. He served many years on the Valley Co-op Board of Directors. To him, the farm had it all: an abundance of mushrooms in the spring, fresh sweet corn in the summer, the thrill of coon hunting in the fall, and prime deer hunting in the winter.

The farm had the Boy Scout cabin that he and his fellow troops built, where they would sleep on the coldest night of winter; the campground and shelter that he and Mert built that hosted family reunions, graduation and engagement parties, and served as a sanctuary to get away from it all.

Bob could close his eyes and smell the fresh-cut silage, hear the bellow of the cows, and the crack of Mitchell's baseball bat as they turned the farm into their own "Field of Dreams," taste the sweetness of victory after winning the daily sprint from the barn to the house with his son Christopher, and feel the warmth of his grandson on his lap while riding the tractor. With Luann at his side, he had all he ever wanted right there.

"We'll forever miss you and the things we would've learned with just a little more time."

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Olga; a sister, Janice; and a cousin and close friend, Mert Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Luann Nims of Clermont; two sons, Christopher (DeeDee) Nims of Robins and Mitchell (Lindsey) Nims of Ames; two grandchildren, Kinnick Robert Nims and Alexis Melrose Nims of Robins; two brothers, LaVerne Nims of Clermont and Gary (Melody) Nims of Drake, Colo.; a sister, Jeanette (Joe) Moschel of Hawkeye; many nieces and nephews.
