Vern E. "Whitey" Schissel, 73, of 575 Cooper Place, Dubuque, died at 11:05 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at home from complications of cancer.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Wayne Ressler at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Dubuque. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.

Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd., Dubuque, was in charge of arrangements.

Vern E. Schissel was born Oct. 23, 1936, in Ossian. He was the son of Elmer and Bea (Holtey) Schissel.

On July 30, 1955, Vern married Sharleen Smith of West Union at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian. The couple had seven children and a foster daughter.

Vern worked for 33 years for Frommelt Industries, where he was plant manager.

During his 18 years of retirement he enjoyed woodworking, playing pool, taking long walks, and spending time with family and friends. He also played softball for many years. Vern and Sharleen enjoyed dancing for many years, as well.

Preceding Vern in death were his parents; a daughter, Peggy Swift; and three brothers, Darrel, Bill and Lee Schissel.

He is survived by his wife Sharleen; his children, Frank (Pricilla) Schissel of Springfield, Mass., Jay (Eileen) Schissel of Davenport, Tom (Penny) Schissel, John Schissel, Dellane (Steve) Tressel, and Lori (Larry) Karwoski, all of Dubuque; a foster daughter, Pam (Rich) Lenz of Peosta; a son-in-law, Jeff Swift of Dubuque; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lynn (Steve) Wolf of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a brother, Donnie (Joan) Schissel of Ossian.
