Michael J. Ameling, 56, of Dorchester, Iowa, died of natural causes on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at his home.

Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Michael Joseph Ameling, son of Felix and Colette (Langreck) Ameling, was born Aug. 26, 1953, in West Union.

He attended grade school in Waucoma and Festina and graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1971.

After high school, Michael attended Area One Vocational-Technical School in Calmar and Loras College in Dubuque. He graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1975.

He worked for two years in Cedar Rapids and then for 25 years at Luther College in Decorah, retiring in 2002.

In addition, Michael created handmade carpet bags, forged ironwork and ran an online business.

Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Catherine Langreck and John and Mathilda Ameling; and his brother, Carl Raymond Ameling, in 1972.

Michael is survived by his parents, Felix and Colette Ameling of West Union; a sister, Pat (Dick) Raddatz of Cedar Rapids; three brothers, Dave (Dianne) Ameling of Ossian, Dan (Sayonara) Ameling of Pineville, Mo., and Tom (Laura) Ameling of Clermont; eight nieces and nephews; three great-nieces and -nephews; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
