Mrs. GLEN (Hazel Alcine Smith) KNAPP 1906-1985

Hazel Alcine Smith Knapp was born May 25, 1906, near Hawkeye, to Guhist and Dora (Benthusen) Smith. She attended schools in Hawkeye and Elgin.

She was united in marriage to Glen Knapp on February 19, 1925. To this union four daughters and one son were born. The couple farmed in the area before moving to West Union in 1955. Hazel then was employed by Palmer Memorial Hospital, West Union for 27 years, until her health failed. The last three years she had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in West Union, where she died Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the age of 79.

She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Rena, and two daughters, Helen Ruth and Arlene Francis.

Hazel is survived by her husband, Glen; two daughters, Betty (Mrs. Gordon Ruroden), and Katherine (Mrs. Melvin Ewing), both of West Union; a son, Gerald, Des Moines; seven grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 11, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union, with the Rev. Richard Menzel officiating. Burial was in Oakridge Cemetery, Auburn. Pallbearers were Pat Woodson, Bud Jensen, Elmer Lantz, Roland Gruver, Lester Springer, Clifford Saboe.

Arrangements were by Burnham & Wood Funeral Home, West Union.
