Harold H. Patrick 1924 - 2009

Funeral services for Harold H. Patrick, 85, of Hawkeye, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, with the Rev. William Horn officiating.

Friends may call today (Wednesday) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Hawkeye, and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday.

Burial will be in the Hawkeye Cemetery, Hawkeye. Military rites will be conducted by Arnold-Rogers American Legion Post 312 of Hawkeye.

Casket bearers will be Daryl Erickson, Bryan Erickson, Ryan Patrick, David Berns, Mark Patrick, Roger Patrick, Larry Erickson, Shane Patrick, Kevin Berns, Phillip Berns, Richard Patrick, and Craig Schmadeke.

Becker-Milnes Funeral Service, Sumner, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold died of natural causes on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

Harold Herbert Patrick, son of Rodger Everett and Hazel (Whitcher) Patrick, was born July 7, 1924, near West Union. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in West Union.

Harold attended country schools in the West Union and Donnan areas.

On Jan. 31, 1943, he was united in marriage with Thelma L. Ruroden by the Rev. G.W. Ukena at the home of Edmund and Bena Lauer in West Union. Four children were born to this union.

After serving his country in World War II, Harold worked as a mechanic at John Falb and Sons Garage in Elgin, was a truck driver for Darling Rendering Co. in Alpha, and owned and operated the Skyline Café in Hawkeye with his wife, Thelma, for several years. After selling the café in 1971, he went to work driving a truck for Paul Niemann Construction in Sumner until his retirement in 1987. Following retirement he continued to work part-time for Niemann's as well as Stepp's Melons.

Harold was a member Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, Arnold-Rogers American Legion Post 312 of Hawkeye, and the Elgin and Hawkeye fire departments. He was a charter member of the Hawkeye Lions Club and served several years on the Hawkeye City Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma, in 2007; two brothers, Carl and Melvin; two sisters, Ida Vernice Northrop and Eileen in infancy; and a great-granddaughter.

Harold is survived by two daughters, Sharron Erickson of Hawkeye and Rosalita (Allan) Berns of Winthrop; two sons, Larry (Kathi) Patrick of Shell Rock and Dean (LaVonne "Bonnie") Patrick of West Union; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Earl of Elkader, John of Missouri, Donald of Hawkeye, and Lloyd of Oelwein; several nieces and nephews.
