Bernice May Nickels

Funeral services for Mrs. Bernice Nickels were held Monday, April 20, 1998 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Methodist Church at Elgin, IA. The Rev. Arlie Ellingson officiated. Sara Strong was the organist and Arthur Amundson was the soloist. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Elgin Cemetery.

Bernice May Nickels, the daughter of Willis and Zliza (Meyer) Chase, was born February 1, 1904, at Maynard, IA. She died Friday, April 17, 1998 in the Elkader Care Center at Elkader, IA. She had reached the age of 94 years, two months and 16 days.

On September 12, 1926, she was married to George Nickels at Hawkeye, IA. To this union eight children were born. The couple farmed in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. Later, George became a carpenter, moving as the job required. They have lived in the Elgin, IA area for the last several years.

Bernice served as the Illyria correspondent for both the Elgin Echo and the Clayton County Register at Elkader. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and had held various district offices, as well as being active in 4-H.

She is survived by her children, Owen Nickels and wife Alma of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Robert Nickels and wife June of Mack, Colorado, Carol and husband Jerry Anderson of Castalia, IA, Gayle and husband Joe Olson of Clermont, IA and Merlin Nickels of Carbondale, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one brother Ralph Chase of Volga, IA; a sister Inez and husband Will Christen of Elgin, IA.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, George, who died in 1979; two sons, Everett Nickels in 1934, Gerald Nickels in 1973; a daughter Lois Jane Nickels in 1934; three brothers: Elmer Chase, Lester Chase and Floyd Chase; a sister Rose Ella Herman; two grandsons Samson Olson and Myron Nickels.

Casketbearers were Scott Anderson, Eric Olson, Robert Olson, David Christen, Louis Christen and Mark Nickels.
