Leslie L. "Les" Lembke 1939 - 2009

Funeral services for Leslie L. "Les" Lembke, 70, of Elgin, Iowa, were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin. The Rev. Rusty Phillips officiated.

Burial with military rites was in the church cemetery.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elgin was in charge of arrangements.

Les died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, following a brief illness.

Leslie Lewis Lembke was born May 7, 1939, on the family farm to Elmer and Carrie (Kraus) Lembke. He was baptized at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader on June 25, 1939, and confirmed at Elgin Lutheran Church on May 22, 1955.

After graduating from Elgin High School in 1956, Leslie enlisted in the United States Army in 1957.

He was united in marriage with Sharon Johanningmeier on Aug. 18, 1962. Four children were born to this union.

Leslie farmed for most of his life. One of the highlights of his life was threshing days on his farm.

He was also a member of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department and Elgin Lutheran Church.

He loved fishing, sports, dancing, playing cards, county fairs and mushroom hunting.

Leslie was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Carrie Lembke; and a brother, Karl Lembke.

Survivors include his four children, Lori (Steven) Kennedy of Walker, Luann (Leslie) Amundson of Clermont, Pamela (Scott) O'Hare of West Union, Loren (Ann) Lembke of Geneseo, IL; 11 grandchildren, Tasha Amundson, Tyler Amundson, Brittany Amundson, Amanda O'Hare, Mariah O'Hare, Caleb O'Hare, Olivia O'Hare, Luke Lembke, Kylie Lembke, Molly Lembke, and Shelby Kennedy.

Also surviving are a brother, Earl (Bonnie) Lembke of Elkader; two sisters, Judy (Don) Mahlow of State Center and Wanda (Tracey) Lambert of Ames; a sister-in-law, Eloise Lembke of Plano, Texas; many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
