Ruth Lena Helgerson

Funeral services for Ruth Helgerson were held Saturday, September 29, 2001, at 10:30 A. M. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Robert Hupp officiated. Marian Schutte was the organist and Kim Schutte was the soloist. Casket Bearers were Brock Helgerson, Bryce Helgerson, Chad Helgerson, Dan Kohls, Darby Suckow, Jim Trappe. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Ruth Lena Suckow Helgerson, the daughter of Fred Suckow and Sophia Schave Suckow, was born May 13, 1917 in Fayette County near Clermont, Iowa. She passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2001 in the Ossian Senior Hospice at Ossian, Iowa, at the age of 84 years, four months, and 12 days.
She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at Castalia and confirmed at Maynard, Iowa. Ruth attended the Maynard School.

On March 11, 1941 Ruth was married to Henry Amandis Helgerson at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage at West Union, Iowa. To this union five children were born. They farmed in the Postville Junction area for 15 years. Ruth was employed first at the Groth Turkey Plant and then at Iowa Turkey Products.

Her family will remember her as a kind unassuming person who was always ready to help out when needed. She loved her family, her garden and flowers and puppies. Ruth made quilts for each member of her family. She also liked to crochet and to cook.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry, who died in 1989, a daughter-in-law, Jane Helgerson, five brothers, Otto, Charles, Lester, Henry, and Helmuth ("Jack"), three sisters, Viola Ihde, Esther Bachman, and her twin sister, Ruby Mabb.

Surviving are her children, four sons, Ernest Helgerson of Clermont, Richard Helgerson and his wife, Sandie, of Postville, Daryl and his wife, Mary, of Castalia, and Ronald Helgerson, of Postville, one daughter, Nancy and her husband, Joe Hill of Huntingtown, Maryland; 11 grandchildren, Sheila and husband, Danny Kohls, Sharnel Helgerson, Michael Hill and Scott Hill and wife, Christa, Bryce and Brock Helgerson, Joan and Amy Helgerson, Chad and Holly Helgerson, and Cory Helgerson, and six great grandchildren, Samantha Jane Kohls, Spencer Kohls, Austin Kohls, Austin, Emma Rose, and Garrett Hill.

Ruth was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA.
