Lila G. Summers 1921-2009

Funeral services for Lila G. Summers, 87, of West Union, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 26, at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union. The Rev. David Grant and the Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson will officiate.

Interment will be in the West Union Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Roger Chensvold, Lee Voshell, Jim Gratias, Kurt Bemiss, Mark Spies and Dale Ungerer.

Lila's death occurred Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, after she became ill on Sunday, June 14.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, is handling the arrangements.

Lila Genevieve (Anfinson) Summers, daughter of Cornel and Martha (Lofte) Anfinson, was born July 6, 1921, in West Union.

After her graduation from West Union High School in 1939, she worked for Johnson Ice Cream Co. and Woodard Insurance Co. Lila then went to business school in Kansas City and worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C., for two and a half years.

On Oct. 19, 1946, Lila was united in marriage with Frederick "Fritz" Summers. They lived in Cuba City, Wis., until 1951. They then went into partnership with her father in the automotive parts business in West Union. Following Fritz's death in 1963, Lila continued to work at the business until February 2009. It was then she fell and broke her hip.

Lila had also worked at Boot Hill Supper Club for several years as a bartender and waitress.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Shrine Widows' Association, and Zion Lutheran Church.

She loved dogs, flowers, shopping, people-watching, dancing, watching and laughing at the comedy shows on public TV.

In addition to her husband, Fritz, Lila was preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Arlene Schreiner of Beaverton, Ore.; her niece, Connie (Jim) Gratias of Alexandria, Minn.; her nephew, Kim (Kendra) Schreiner of Beaverton, Ore.; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; a great-great-nephew; a great-great-niece; her longtime friend Jack Cline of West Union and the rest of her NAPA family; and special friends Marie Swale and Lois Underdahl.
