Thomas C. Hoey 1937-2009

A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas C. Hoey, 71, of West Union, Iowa, was celebrated by the Rev. Dale Rausch at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 19, at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union.

Organist Sue McDonough provided music, which included "Here I Am, Lord," "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagle's Wings," and "How Great Thou Art." Sue Hoey sang "Come to Jesus."

The pall was placed by Erin Hoey, Steffen Hoey, Riley Hoey, and Mackenzie Hoey.

Briana Hoey and Jordan Hoey were the altar servers. Lectors were Francis Riha and Joe Scally. The Offertory gifts were presented by Jeanie Riha and Mary Jane Eckenrod. Eleanor Martin was the Eucharistic minister.

Interment was in St. Rose Cemetery, Waucoma. Casket bearers were Sean Hoey, Bill Hoey, Tyler Hoey, Jim Hoey, Jack Barloon and Wayne Wurzer. Tom's grandchildren were the honorary casket bearers.

Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, was in charge of arrangements.

Tom's death occurred on June 16, 2009, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center from injuries sustained in a fall.

Thomas Charles Hoey, son of Leonard and Edna (Shepherd) Hoey, was born Aug. 8, 1937, in New Hampton. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Church in Waucoma.

After graduating from Waucoma High School in 1955, Tom served his country with the Navy Seabees in the United States Navy.

After his honorable discharge in 1959, Tom earned his plumbing license and began working at Schmitt Plumbing and Heating at Charles City. In 1965, he started as a foreman at Vick's Heating and Plumbing in Decorah, where he was employed until his retirement in 2004.

On March 3, 1962, Tom was united in marriage with Mary Anne Barloon at St. John's Church in Fort Atkinson. To this union six children were born.

During his life, Tom enjoyed being a member of the West Union Fire Department for 25 years, playing cards, fishing, mushroom hunting, playing pool, cheering on the Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his daughter, Karen, in 1964; his sister, Sally Wurzer, in 1995; his brother, Pat, in 2008; and his grandparents.

Those left to cherish Tom's memory are Mary Anne, his wife of 47 years; his five children and their spouses, Kevin (Janell) of Cottage Grove, Wis., Tom (Sue) of Jesup, Brian (Julie) of West Des Moines, Ryan (Jamie) of West Union, and Katie of Lakewood, Calif.

Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Sean, Erin, Briana, Riley, Tyler, Steffen, Alyssa, Kristin, Jordan, Mackenzie, Kelsey, Nolan and Brooklyn; two sisters, Jeanie (Francis) Riha of Waucoma and Mary Jane (Ron) Eckenrod of New Hampton; two brothers, Bill (Kathy) Hoey of New Hampton and Jim (Elaine) Hoey of Waucoma; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
