Julia Brownell, daughter of Reuben Martin Abbott and Ruth Esther Graves, was born August 6, 1890 on a farm near West Union: The family moved to Oelwein when she was one year old. She graduated from Oelwein Community High School at the age of fifteen. She was a violinist and played in various orchestras. On November 25, 1908 she married Charles Chester Brownell at her parents' home in Oelwein. The couple moved to a farm six miles east of Oelwein where they resided all their married life, forty-two and a half years.
Mr. Brownell died in March of 1951, and Mrs. Brownell then moved to Oelwein where she had lived ever since. She was active in church activities, a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Perseverance Sunday
School class.
Mrs. Brownell had been a resident of the Grandview Nursing Home for the past six years, having been the sixth resident to move there. In failing health, she was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein Saturday, October 24th, and she passed away Tuesday evening, October 27th, at the age of eighty years.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth, Mrs. Norman Gunnison of Stanley, two brothers, Grant Brownell of El Paso, Texas, and George Brownell of Phoenix, Ariz., and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. George Leonard and Mrs. Eugene Borland, and a brother, Merle Abbott, as well as by her parents. Services were conducted at Hintz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with the Rev. Warren Paige officiating. Mrs. Sam Smith was organist and Mrs. Glenn Short sang. Casket bearers were Frank Morgan, Kyle Ingamells, Clarence Alshouse, Charles Morgan, Carl Follmer, and Loraine Chase Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.
