Clyde E. Smith, 78, of Oelwein, Iowa, died Saturday evening, May 23, 2009 at Mercy Living Plus, after a brief illness.

Mass of the Resurrection is noon Thursday, May 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein. Burial will be in Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, with a scripture service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Clyde Eugene Smith was born March 7, 1931 at Arlington, Iowa, the son of Glen and Lula Alison (Gray) Smith. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1949. Clyde married Lois Marie Wiedner Dec. 27, 1952 at Strawberry Point. Clyde worked at Wardell Chevrolet and then at Arnold Motor Supply from Jan. 10, 1966 until his retirement July 1, 2000.

Clyde is survived by his children, James (Linda) Cue of Marion, Juanita (Gary) Harkin of Oelwein, Janet (Rob) Hopwood of Oelwein, Jerilyn (Craig) Purvis of Oelwein and Jim (Karen) Smith of Arlington; 12 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; a sister Charlotte (Dale) Fogle of Crosslake, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, Feb. 24, 2006, two daughters and a son in infancy and two infant grandchildren.
