Nettie Gertrude St. John was born June 24, 1882, the daughter of Thomas and Amelia Prout
Wharram on a farm one mile south of Stanley. She died June 15, 1953 at Mercy hospital at Oelwein
at the age of 70 years.
She married Sherman E. St. John in 1923 and had been living with her niece, Mrs. W. E. Jellings,
in Oelwein and surrounding community since the death of her husband in 1933.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Frank and Chauncey, two sisters, Ella
Bates and Alta, who died in infancy.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jellings and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Reed, Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Maley and Mrs and
Mrs.. Robert Wharram, Stanley; Mr. and Mrs. David Bower, Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Butters,
Dubuque, and Mr. and Mrs: Everett Lemon, Montana.
Funeral services were held, at the Brant funeral chapel Wednesday, June 17, at 2 p. m. at the
Presbyterian church. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Casket bearers were Gordon Maley, William Borland, Richard Reed, Robert Wharram, Ray Smith and Herbert Butters.
