OELWEIN — Hugo D. Sharff, 91, of Oelwein,
Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2003, at
Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein after a brief illness.
Hugo Donald Sharff was born Sept 2, 1911, in
Lamont, Iowa, son of Herman and Ina Whitney
Sharff. He attended the Lamont School and graduated
from Oelwein High School in 1929. Hugo married
Easter Lillie Aurilla Rau on Aug. 1, 1935, at
the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. Hugo was
a farmer for 65 years. He farmed most of his life
northeast of Oelwein.
Hugo was a 50-year member of the Sunnyside
Masonic Lodge No. 510 AF&AM of Maynard, and then the Hebron
Masonic Lodge No. 374 AF&AM of Oelwein. He was president of the
Stanley Consolidated School Board from 1954 to 1956. Hugo was also
a member of the Farm Bureau and a member of the Maynard Co-op.
Survivors include: a daughter, Sharon (William) Falck of
Oelwein; a son, Charles (Kareen) Sharff of Fayette; six grandchildren,
Paul (Becky) Falck of Oskaloosa, Melinda (William) Kitzman
of Beaman, Mark (Florence) Falck of South Elgin, HI., Brenda
(Darwin) Werning of Marion, Diane (Marcus) Makaiwi of Colorado
Springs, Colo., and Brent (Connie) Sharff of Maynard; 13 greatgrandchildren
and three stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters,
Edith Ostermann of Elmhurst, Ill., and Opal Galer and Gladys
Sharff, both of Oelwein: a brother, Herman Sharff of Oelwein; four
sisters-in-law. Dorothy McAllister of Oelwein, Wilma Brink of
Elkader, Darline Rau of Aurora and ilo Mae Rau of Arlington; and
many nieces and nephews.
Hugo was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Lillie on
May 10, 1993.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday; Feb. 11, 2003, at Jamison-
Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with the Rev. Richard B. Emery
officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.
