Funeral services were held Tuesday for Clarence Leo Weitenhagen, 78, of West Union, who died Tuesday, Dec 29, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union following a heart attack and a one-car accident on Highway 150 south of West Union.
There were 11:00 am services at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with the Rev. Craig Bowyer officiating. Burial was in the West Union Cemetery, and Burnham-Wood Funeral Home of West Union was in charge of the arrangements.
The casket bearers were William Fedeler, Dean Weitenhagen, Brad Ellison, Don Reeder, Dan Flitte and Greg Ellison. Music was provided by organist Melba Wenthe and vocalist Eddie Begalske.
Clarence Leo, son of August Herman and Helen (Knoll) Weitenhagen, was born March 5, 1916, in rural Hawkeye. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, where he was a lifetime member. He attended country school through the eighth-grade.
On March 20, 1939, he and Genevieve LaVaughn Cline were married in Clinton, Iowa. They farmed for many years between Hawkeye and West Union before moving to West Union, where he worked as a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Genevieve of West Union; a daughter, Patricia Flitte of Sioux Falls, SD; a son, Mike of Sonoma, Calif; a brother, Harley of Sumner; three sisters, Alice Rose of Pinellas Park, Fla, Arlene Lauer of West Union, and Margaret Ellison of Fredericksburg; and five grandchildren, Andrea Reeder of Bronxville, NY, Christina Flitte of Yankton, SD, Daniel Flitte of Camp Pendleton, Calif; and Matthew and Laura Weitenhagen of Sonoma, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
