Funeral Service held Thursday for Elmer Blockhus

Funeral services for a West Union farmer, Elmer Blockhus, 89, were held Thursday, July 3, in St Olaf Lutheran church, West Union with Pastor Harold Sutter officiating. Burial is in the West Union cemetery. Pallbearers were Lawrence Blockhus, Dick Blockhus, Otto Blockhus, Abe Suazo, Clair Anderson and Robert Stendel.

Elmer Blockhus, one of ten children of Halver and Jorgina Gilbert Blockhus was born Oct 21, 1895, and died of a heart attack Monday, June 30, in his home. He was baptized and confirmed at the East Clermont church. On Jan 27, 1921, he was married to Emma Weitenhagen. To them two children were born, Arthur and Helen.

He farmed for 33 years on the Fred Blunt farm until 1950, when he retired and moved to West Union.

He is survived by his wife, Emma (Weitenhagen) Blockhus; one daughter, Mrs Guy (Helen) Lawrence, West Union; three grandchildren, one brother, Joseph Blockhus, West Union; six sisters, Mrs Paul (Anna) Hammond, Oelwein; Mrs Fred (Clara) Weitenhagen, Cedar Rapids; Mrs Carl (Agnes) Stendel, West Union; Mrs Joseph (Josephine) Schmeizer, Red Wing, Minn; Mrs Raymond (Helen) Drewes, West Union; and Mrs Dale (Gladys) Monnahan, Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur, and two brothers, Louis and Clarence.
