Simpson S. Fenley, who died at his
home in this city Thursday night,
March 3, was born near Louisville,
Ky., July 17, 1842. He had reached
the ripe old age of 78 years, 7 months
and 16 days. He lived in his native
state for over forty years and served
three years of that time in the Civil
War. Later moved to Minnesota and
nineteen years ago came to Oelwein
where he has resided ever since.
He was twice married and one son,
Alonzo, by his marriage, lives in
Harrodsburg, Ky. Thirty years ago
he was united in marriage with Minnie
Phillips Lamppin. Three children were
born to this union, one of whom died
in infancy. The surviving children are
Mrs. Hetty Blusch of this city, Miss Mary
Fenley, who resides at home, and a
step daughter, Mrs. Ruby Green, of
Oelwein. Besides wife and children the
deceased leaves to mourn their loss, one
brother A. O. Fenley of Rockville, Mo.
and one sister, Mrs. Lela Warren of
Louisville, Ky.; also ten grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Fenley was a man of untiring energy
and determination. He was always at work
and up to the time his last illness became
acute he was to be found at the pattern shop
of the C. and G. W. Railway, where he was
foreman for many years.
Funeral services were held at the
Christian church Sunday at 2:30 pm and
were in charge of Rev. W. T. Walker and
Dr. W. C. Cleworth. The Knights of
Pythias attended in a body and marched
from the late home to the church. The
large attendance of friends and the
profusion of flowers gave evidence of the
esteem in which Mr. Fenley was held.
