John Henry Manning 1862-1943

MANNING, MCCRACKEN, ROSZHART

John Henry, son of Henry D.
and Sarah C. Manning, was born
in Belvidere, Illinois, on July 18,
1862, and died at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. G. A. Hanson, 17 4th
Ave., N. E., Oelwein, Iowa, on
July 11, 1943, lacking but one
week of 81 years.
His father was born in London,
Canada, and his mother in Washington
county, New York. They
lived in Illinois until 1864 when
they moved to Iowa and settled in
Fayette county on a farm just
south of the present city of Oelwein.
Here he grew to manhood
and made his home for 53 years
of his life.
On November 24, 1887 he was
united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth
Young at Hazleton, Iowa, who
preceded him in death October 16,
1928. They continued to live on
the home farm where he delighted
himself with the raising of
fine cattle. He was also a lover
horses. On account of poor health
they moved to town in 1917 where
they lived on North Frederick
street for one year and then purchased
their home at 504 First
Ave., N. E., which was their home
until after the death of Mrs. Manning
For the last 11 years he has
enjoyed all the comforts of home
with Mr.and Mrs. G. A. Hansen,
where he received the same loving
care as a member of the family
and where he hoped he might
spend his last days. |
He was a member of the Presbyterian
church and was a regular
worshiper to the very last. He was
a kind husband and father, a good
neighbor and a considerate friend.
He leaves to mourn his passing,
one daughter Mrs. Pearl L. Mc-
Cracken of Chicago, Illinois, and
one granddaughter, Mrs. Maxine
Roszhart of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Funeral service were held at the
Presbyterian church on Wednesday,
July 14, 1943 at 2 o'clock with
Rev. L. W. Hauter in charge. Mrs.
J. A. Courtright and Mrs. C. B
Hintz sang two songs accompanied
by Mrs L. E. Hilsabeck. Burial at
Otsego.
