John Wesley Gerken 1859-1921

John Wesley Gerken was born in
Oran Township, Fayette County, Iowa,
March 11, 1859 and passed from this
life in his home in Oran Township,
September 15, 1921, age 62 years, 6
months and 4 days. He was united in
marriage to Alice L. Judd January 11,
1882. This union was blessed with
four children, two girls and two boys,
Mrs. Etta Henry residing at Bovina,
Colorado, Mrs. Maud Dibble, near Oelwein,
Iowa, and Walter and John at.
home. Most of his life was spent in
Oran Township with the exception of
five years which he spent in Dakota
and six years in Washington. Upon
his return from Washington in 1894
he settled on a farm in Oran Township
where he resided up to the time of
his death. Besides his wife and
children Mr. Gerken leaves to mourn
their loss one brother, Nelson, of Oran
Township and one sister, Mrs. Agnes
Faust of Oelwein. Mr. Gerken was an
industrious man who held lay the
foundation in the township where he
has lived. He was a quiet unassuming
man, fair and square, a man who was
held in high regard and in his death
the sorrowing relatives have the
sympathy of the many friends. Funeral
services were conducted in the Methodist
church in Fairbank Sunday afternoon at
2:30; Rev. W. C. Cleworth, pastor of the
Methodist church in Oelwein, officiating.
Interment was in the Fairbank Cemetery.
