Charles H. Wright, one of Fayette
county's oldest settlers and a Civil
War veteran, passed away at the
home of his son, William A. Wright,
four miles west of Oelwein, Sunday
noon. Mr. Wright became ill Thursday
of last week but no alarming
symptoms were developed until Saturday
noon, from which time he rapidly
grew worse until the end.
The funeral services will be held
Tuesday forenoon at 10 o'clock at
the Grace Methodist church in Oelwein,
conducted by Rev. A. W.
Henke, and interment will be at the
Fairbank cemetery.
Charles H. Wright was born January
7, 1841, in Oneida county, N. Y.,
being the fifth of eight children,
whose parents were William and
Clark Wright: In 1844 he moved
with his parents to Chicago, where
they spent the summer of that year,
and then located five miles north of
Elgin, 111. After ten years in that
section they decided to conie .further
west, and in May 1854, they started
on a journey to Iowa, traveling via
Rockford and Freeport, Ill, crossing
the river at Galena. Preceding westward
they arrived at Fairbank, where
they decided to locate. The town at
that time was a mere frontier hamlet
of four families. Mr. Wright remained
at home assisting his parents
with the farming until August 15,
1862, when he enlisted in Co. C., 27th
Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was
honorably discharged at Clinton,
Iowa, August 8, 1S65, after three
years faithful, service, when he reurned
to his home.
In November, 1867, he was united
in marriage to Hattie Potts, of Elgin,
Ill. To this union six children were
born: Ida Am., Virorie Sherman,
Charles F, Myrtle Bell, Laura M.,
and William Arthur, the latter the
only surviving member of the family
and with whom the deceased has
made his home since the death of his
wife, on April 17, 1922.
Mr. Wrighf dictated his own obituary
and life, story about a year ago,
and this story will be published in
these columns tomorrow.
