Services were held for Rose M. Butikofer, 84, of Elgin Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Illyria Community Church, rural Elgin with Rev. Rick Johnson and Rev. Arleon Kelley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Rose died Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union following a brief illness.

Rose Marie Dennler Butikofer was born December 6, 1923, at home on the family farm in rural Elgin, to Ben and Louise (Muehlenthaler) Dennler. Rose attended country schools during her elementary years and graduated from Elgin High School in 1941.

She married Harry L. Butikofer August 17, 1943, at the Baptist Parsonage in Elgin. They had six children. Together Rose and Harry operated a commercial painting business for 55 years. As Harry sprayed, Rose faithfully opened the containers and kept the paint mixed for him. In 1977, they moved just up the road from their home place and built a new home.

Two pleasures that Rose enjoyed were watching nature that surrounded their home and also mending clothes for her large extended family. For her mending service, Rose never accepted any money, her only charge was that her customers returned and visit her and Harry.

Rose was an active member of the Illyria church. She also enjoyed her four trips to Switzerland to visit relatives, other European countries and trips to Hawaii, Mexico and the Grand Canyon.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Keith Butikofer; two brothers, Glenn and William Dennler and daughter-in-law Liz Butikofer.

Survivors include her husband, Harry of Elgin; five children, Merlin (Kathy) Butikofer of Delhi, Louise (Leo) Johansen of Elgin, Richard (Donna) Butikofer of Cedar Rapids, Robert Butikofer of Cedar Falls, Gary (Cindy) Butikofer of Elgin; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Lee (Ione) Dennler of Elgin; a special cousin, Betty Hennick, many other relatives and friends.
