BROWNELL, TUCKER, MANNING

Mrs. Sarah Brownell, whose beautiful
life took its departure from its
house of clay Sabbath morning, May
23, 1897, at the home of her son Frank
in Scott township, was the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Tucker of
Fowler, Trimble Co., Ohio, at which
place she was born, Feb. 21, 1832.
April 29, 1848 at the age of sixteen
she was married to Chester H. Brownell
of Grant Co., Wisconsin. Two
children were born to them. Almond,
who still lives in Wisconsin, and Mary
Jane who died in her childhood. While
this little girl was still an infant the
mother was left a widow, but in 1856
she married Wm. Brownell of LaFayette
Co., Wis., a brother of her former
husband and to them was given four
children, all of whom are still living,
viz: George, of this city, Frank, who
lives on his farm, Grant and Mrs.
Nellie Manning, both of whom reside
in Stanley. In 1878 Mr. and Mrs.
Brownell with their family removed
from Wisconsin to Iowa settling in
Scott township where he had purchased
a large tract of land. He died in
1881 since which time the farm residence
has been her home, also that of
her son Grant until quite recently
when he retired from farm life. Her
health having failed more than a year
ago she came to Oelwein to stay at
the home of her son George, that she
might be more conveniently cared for
by her physician. Two weeks ago
she went to visit her children and was
considered as well as usual until the
Friday proceeding her death. Seven
years ago she united, with the Union
church at Stanley, but her life has
ever been a grand and noble one and
testifies more clearly than words can
do that she was always a Christian. Of
her be it said.
The funeral services were held in
the church at Stanley, Tuesday at
noon, conducted by Rev. Beyer, assisted
by Rev. Leonard, both of Hazleton.
The church decorations and
floral pieces which loving neighbors
and friends had spent much time in
preparing were very beautiful. A
thing which almost seemed to speak
so strongly did it impress its lovliness
upon all was the vacant rocker
heavily draped in mourning with the
words "Mother gone home" on the
back. All her children and their families accompanied the remains to her
old home in Wisconsin where the body
was taken for interment.
