George Bayness was born in Scotland April 3, 1849 and died in Oelwein July 6, 1922 at the age of 73 years, three months and three days. He was married to Jane Arnold in September, 1878, to which three sons were born, namely John Arnold, William George and Joseph Walter.

He came to this county in 1891 with his family and settled at Waverly, Iowa later moving to Tripoli, Iowa where his wife died in 1893.

In the years of 1899 he was married to Rebeka Schrader. Again death entering his home, taking his wife, April 1913.

He came to Oelwein in 1900, working in the C.G.W. shops for the last 22 years. In February 1922 he began to fail in health and was a great sufferer, passing away at 6:15 o'clock Thursday, July 6.

He leaves to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father, his sons, daughter-in-law and six grandchildren, besides a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday pm by Dr. Gilbert of the Episcopal church.
