Christine J. Manning, eldest daughter of Daniel and Sarah Manning, was born in Bowmanville, Canada; June 30, 1853. She came with her parents to Iowa, early in 1869 where she was married June 25, 1880 to George A. DeVolt. They moved to Kansas in 1883. One son was born to this union, dying in infancy, in the spring of 1891, they returned to Iowa, where her husband died the following year.
She was united in marriage to M. M. Elder, October 16, 1894, living near Stanley and Oelwein until the time of her death, April 17, 1918 at the age of 64 years 9 months and 18 days. Early in life she became a Christian and united with the M. E. church in which relationship she remained until the time of her death. She leaves to mourn their loss, the husband, three step daughters, Mrs. L. O. Smith of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Herman Hall of Oelwein and Miss Catherine still a home. Also one sister, Mrs. Grant Brownell of Oelwein and two brothers, S. J. Manning of Stanley and A. J. Manning of Des Moines. The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the home, conducted by Rev. Horace Foote of Hazleton, assisted by Rev. Shaller of Oelwein.
