Doris E. Whitaker, 83, of Oelwein, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 25, 2007 at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein, after a brief illness

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the First Baptist Church in Oelwein, with the Rev. Tim Schoepf officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and after 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

A memorial fund has been established in her name

Doris Eileen Hughson was born Oct. 27, 1924 at Bennett, Colo., the daughter of Welva LeRoy and Bothilda Natilie (Toft) Hughson. Doris married Roy E. Whitaker on Feb. 13, 1945 at Waukon, Iowa. Roy died on April 1, 1998. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oelwein. Doris was a homemaker and a longtime Oelwein resident. She had been a resident of the Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein the last three years.

Doris is survived by two daughters, Linda (Richard) Hannan of Oelwein, and Ruth (Rick) Smith of Oelwein; two sons, Duane (Gail) Whitaker of Portage, Ind., and Steve Whitaker of Oelwein; eight grandchildren, Mark Hannan, Tim Hannan, Brenda Smith, Angela Scardina, Eric Whitaker, Kelly VanFosson, Melissa Smith and Amanda Smith; 11 great grandchildren, Ashley Hannan, Alyssa Hannan, Taylor Hannan, Tyler VanFosson, Dylan VanFosson, Haley VanFosson, Holly VanFosson, Mya Whitaker, Eli Whitaker, Anthony Scardina and Brittney Scardina and two great great grandchildren, Makayla Smith and Rylee Hunter Nolan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy E. Whitaker on April 1, 1998; two sisters Lucielle Hughson and Katherine Bridges; and eight brothers, LeRoy, Robert, Howard, Glen, Nels, Fred, Clyde and Wayne.
