Bertha Lauer 1872-1944

Mrs. Carl Lauer, 72, was stricken shortly after noon Saturday with an illness which ended fatally that day at 4:30 o'clock, at the West Union hospital. She had attended a funeral service on Friday and even Saturday morning had felt as well as usual.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C. Bartels at 1:30 p.m., Monday, at the Burnham Funeral home, and at 2 p.m., at Zion English Lutheran church. Burial was in the West Union cemetery.

Mrs. Lauer, the former Bertha Theresa Krueger, daughter of Henry and Whilamena Krueger, was born February 7, 1872, at Salters, Ozaukee county, Wisc. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, she had been a member of the local Zion Lutheran church since its organization 20 years ago.

In 1888 she had come to Iowa to reside with a brother and sister in Fayette county. On Nov. 24, 1892, she united in marriage with Carl Lauer, the wedding taking place in the Old Brick church in Windsor township. For eight years they resided on a farm near Eldorado, then moved to a farm in Windsor township, which is now occupied by their daughter, and then 1928 they moved to their home in West Union. Mr. Lauer died in January 1943.

Mrs. Lauer is survied by their daughter, Mrs. George Quandt and their grandson, Robert Quandt; also by one sister, Mrs. Johanna Koehler of Hawkeye; and three brothers: Carl Krueger, West Bend, Wis.; William Krueger, Wykoff, Minn., and Henry Krueger, Hawkeye. Relatives from a distance who came for the funeral services were William Krueger, and his son Edwin of Wykoff, Minn.
