S. C. Barnhouse, 68, dropped dead at 8:50 a.m. Friday while sweeping a very light snowfall off of the walks at his home. He had a warning attack or two in recent years, but was able to work steadily. He was a useful man in the community, as he had several skills of handicraft, and though he was under no necessity of earning wages he kept busy helping out with the work of carpenters, painters, plumbers, and harnessmakers. Thus he was able to be of great service since the war created the labor shortage.

The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Sterling J. Baldwin at 2 p.m. Monday from the Burnham funeral home.

Schuyler Colfax Barnhouse was born April 12, 1875, east of West Union, Iowa. His parents were James and Elizabeth (Harper) Barnhouse.

He was married May 9, 1898, at the Methodist parsonage in West Union to Grace Cullins. Five children were born: H. M., now of Springfield, Ill.; Irvin and Ada (Mrs. Otto Taylor), Waucoma; and Bess (Mrs. A. E. Moon), San Antonio, Texas, survive. A daughter, Mary Mildred, died in 1914 at six years of age. Mrs. Barnhouse survives her husband. There are four grandchildren: Roger and Grace Mary Taylor, John Barnhouse, and Stanley Moon.

Mr. Barnhouse spent his early years in Union township and West Union, but shortly after his marriage they moved to a farm near Auburn, Fayette county, where they lived from 1899 till they retired to West Union in 1926. They have occupied their present home at Elm and State streets since June, 1940.

Fayette County Union, January 1944
