Funeral services for Richard W. "Rick" Rients, 53, of Oelwein, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Christ United Presbyterian Church in Oelwein. The Rev. John Kerr will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.

Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, is handling the arrangements.

Richard died Sunday morning, Dec. 9, 2007, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Richard Wayne Rients was born July 29, 1954, in Oelwein to Harold Wayne and Arlene F. (Oldenburg) Rients.

He attended Stanley School and graduated from Oelwein Community High School in 1972. Rick attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.

Rick worked at Norby's Farm Fleet, United Farm Tools and the Oelwein Daily Register, all in Oelwein. He had also worked at Prairie Road Builders in Hazleton and was currently a welder at Atwood Automotive in West Union. He also assisted his father on the family farm east of Oelwein.

Rick was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church, Farm Bureau, Oelwein FFA, Scott Hot Shots 4-H Club, Studebaker Driving Club, the Hart-Parr Oliver Collectors Association, and was a life member of the Mississippi Valley Blues Society.

Preceding Rick in death were his father, Harold, on Oct. 19, 2003; his grandparents, Carl and Florence Oldenburg and Eilt and Grace Rients; six uncles; and an aunt.

Rick is survived by his mother, Arlene Rients of Oelwein; two sisters, Cynthia (Gene) Fox of Maynard and Kathleen (David) Bowers of Urbandale; a nephew; two nieces; aunts and uncles.

A memorial fund has been established in Richard W. Rients' name.
