J. B. Palmer, 76, hanged himself in his woodworking shop at Hawkeye, Iowa, Friday forenoon.

Mr. Palmer left home about 9 a.m., going to his shop down town. When he didn't return, Mrs. Palmer became worried and called the doctor to see if he might be there. Since he hadn't been there, she went down to his shop and found him hanging. This was at 11:20. Dr. Walsh was called and immediately let down the body, which was still warm. Scalp wounds indicated tht he had tried to shoot himself.

Coroner J. R. Wood, Wadena, was called. No inquest was held.

Mr. Palmer had submitted to a major operation in 1940, and since had not been in good health. Recently, he had been in Rochester taking treatments.

He was born Jan. 8, 1867, in Fayette county, where he spent most of his life. On Jan. 4, 1911, he was married to Mrs. Mary Wilbur, Hawkeye. Besides his wife, two stepchildren, Mrs. G. L. Belschner, Hawkeye; and Will Wilbur, Chamberlain, S.D. survive him; also a brother, A. C. Palmer, West Union.

Mr. Palmer was a man of the utmost integrity, a useful citizen, and of a kind and helpful disposition. He was especially thoughtful on the subject of not causing any inconvenience to anyone, and this is considered is probable motive in ending his life before he became helpless.

Fayette County Union, August 27, 1943
