William A. Ziegler (1874-1940)

William A. Ziegler, better known as "Dave' was the son of Christian and Sophia Ziegler and was born on a farm four miles west of Oelwein on March 8, 1874 and died at his home at 7 First Avenue, NE. on Sunday, February 11, 1940, at the age of sixty-five years, seven months and three days. He had been sick since December 22nd.

At fifteen years of age he came to Oelwein and started to work for the Hawkeye Clothing company. Later he was associated in business in the Palace Clothing company with A. M. Kint and R. L. Young. For the last eight years he has been with the Kerwin Clothing company. His entire life was spent here in Oelwein and his whole service was given to the clothing business. Through the years he made many fast friends through his congenial ways and happy disposition. He always enjoyed his friends and was lonely without them.

In 1901 he was united in marriage with Miss Linnie Benham of this city. Five children were born to them of whom four survive and are living in Oelwein.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was devoted to it and was regular in his attendance at worship. He was also a member of the following lodges: Knights of Pythias, Masons and the Elks, and enjoyed the fellowship of these associations.

Surviving him are his wife, two daughters, Zora and Phyllis; two sons Harold and Davey and one grandchild, Carol Ann Ziegler all of Oelwein; one brother Phillip of near Westgate and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Kroehler, of Aurora, Illinois, and Mrs. Lizzie Kauten of Oelwein.

Besides the family he leaves many business associates, neighbors and friends who have learned to appreciate his sterling worth and friendship, and who not bereft of his companionship extend to the stricken their heartfelt sympathy in this their sudden grief.

Funeral Services were held at the Presbyterian church on Tuesday, February 13, 1940 at 2 p. m. conducted by the pastor. Mrs. C. O. Olson and Mrs. M. J. Channer sang two numbers accompanied at the organ by Mrs. L. E. Hilsabeck. Burial at Oran Cemetery.
