Vernon Meyer

Funeral services for Vernon Meyer were held Wednesday, February 8 at 11 a.m. at the West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont. Rev. Donald Loots officiated. Schutte Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.

Vernon Meyer, son of August and Lena (Hulverson) Meyer, was born January 11, 1903 in Clayton County, Iowa. He died Sunday, February 5, 1989 at Community Memorial Hospital, Postville.

He was baptized in 1903 into the Lutheran Faith in Elkader. In 1926 he was confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. He attended school in Castalia.

On January 11, 1926 he married Lenora Nesvik. They had 2 children. Lenora died October 7, 1949. [This date may be wrong as the paper had been tore and pushed together when glued in place.] On May 21, 1950 he married Hazel Johnson. She died in 1957. He married Helen Hatch on July 13, 1959. She died December 17, 1965.

Vernon farmed for about 4 years near Ossian before moving to Clermont where he became manager and lineman for the Clermont Telephone Exchange. He also was a bus driver and carpenter for many years. After retiring he enjoyed wood-working and gardening.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wives, two sisters, Esther Schultz and Vera Buddenberg and two brothers, Walter and Orvil Meyer.

He is survived by one daughter, Arthel "Sally", and her husband, LaVern Stumme; one son, Gordon and his wife, Marlene "Molly", all of Postville; 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one step-daughter, Donna Halderman of Florida and one sister, Inez Schoonmaker, Postville.

Casket bearers were: Terry Stumme, Neal Brainard, Ron Heidt, Alan Meyer, Kenton Groth and Milton Koenig.
