Maria D. Foster was born November 28, 1843, at Evansville, Wisconsin, and came to West Union, Iowa, with her parents in 1849. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Foster. Her father was an able and prominent man in his day and was one of the leaders in the early Methodist church in West Union.

Maria Foster was married to Wm. IV Scott, September 6, 1866, at West Union, Iowa, and to this union were born five children: E. T. Scott, Clermont, Iowa; C. W. Scott, of Ida Grove, Iowa, Helen S. Mathews, of Clermont, Iowa; Maggie Learn, of Clermont, Iowa; Glenn M. Scott, at home.

Mrs. Scott died at her home in Dover township, July 15, 1910, age 66 years, 7 months and 17 days.

Her husband, her five children and two brothers, D. P. Foster and H. E. Foster are left to mourn her untimely departure.

To know Mrs. Scott was to love her. Her nature was naturally undemonstrative; she never made a parade of her virtues. Truly she wore the "ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God, of great price." She was a devout Christian woman, true as a friend, considerate and kind as a neighbor, tender and faithful as wife and mother. Trials and sickness and pain she bore with patience and fortitude. Her cheerfulness and patience were truly remarkable and these traits of character were most seen in her by those who knew her best. A tender, patient, noble Christian woman has passed from among us. Her neighbors, her friends and her family rise up to call her blessed.

She had been sick since last October. The funeral was held at the family residence in Dover township, Sunday, July 17, at 2:00 p.m. and was conducted by Rev. Leonard A. Swisher, of the Methodist church of West Union. A very large concourse of friends testified to the high esteem of those who knew her. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at West Union.
