Funeral services were held for John Mathews Saturday at 2 o'clock in the Methodist Church in West Union, Iowa, with Rev. Paul Potter officiating. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home was in charge.

Burial was at the West Union Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ralph Mathews, Raymond Mathews, Albert Riley, Boscobel, Wis.; Carl Wagner, Clare Wagner and Vern Wagner, West Union. Mrs. J. S. Crowe was organist, and Edgar Traeger was soloist.

John C. Mathews was born November 5, 1871, on a farm near Boscobel, Wis. His father died when he was one year old, and when about 14 he went with his mother to North Dakota where she took up a claim. He lived there until 1894 when he moved to Fayette County.

Mr. Mathews married Helen Scott on March 18, 1903, at West Union. They lived all their life with the exception of a five-year period in and around West Union. About 1946, they moved to town where they resided to the present time. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary three years ago.

Mr. Mathews united with the Methodist Church in West Union about 1911 by transfer of letter. He died at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, Feb. 2.

He was preceded in death by his son, Roy Scott, who died about 22 years ago, his parents, and two brothers.

Surviving are his wife and other relatives.
