Funeral services for Maxine E. Gumm, 82, of Oelwein, formerly of Westgate, were held Friday, Sept. 28, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate with the Rev. Timothy Parker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, was in charge of arrangements.

Maxine's death occurred Tuesday morning, Sept. 25, 2007, at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein following a long illness.

Maxine Elaine (Bonovsky) Gumm was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Sumner to Edwin and Minnie Agusta Emily (Knoll) Bonovsky.

She graduated from Maynard High School in 1942.

On Nov. 6, 1943, Maxine was united in marriage with Albert August "Abbie" Gumm at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

The couple farmed near Westgate for 45 years. They also leased Westgate Tap & Grill for three years. Maxine worked at Conner's Department Store for 17 years and then at Hardee's, both in Oelwein.

When Maxine moved off the farm, she lived at Westhaven Apts. in Oelwein for three years before moving to Arlington Place, also in Oelwein.

She was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital on Aug. 9. On Aug. 13, Maxine was moved to Mercy Living Plus.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and the Westgate American Legion Auxiliary.

Preceding Maxine in death were her parents; her husband, Abbie, on Nov. 26, 1986; her 13-month-old daughter, Pamela Jean; a half sister, Judy Montour; a sister, Darlyn Porter; an infant brother; and her stepfather, Dick McCue.

Survivors include a son, William Gumm of Westgate; a daughter, Mary Hurd of Dewar; two grandsons; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund has been established.
