A memorial service for Donna Mae Brockmeyer, 78, of Calmar, formerly of Eldorado and West Union, was held Monday, Sept. 24, at Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar. The Rev. Norman Bauer officiated.

Internment was in the West Union Cemetery, West Union.

Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, handled the arrangements.

Donna died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, following a brief illness.

Donna Mae (Pape) Brockmeyer was born July 31, 1929, on the family farm near Eldorado. She was the daughter of Henry and Mildred (Osmundson) Pape. Donna was baptized Aug. 18, 1929, by the Rev. J.G. Oldman and confirmed in 1943 by the Rev. William A. Foege at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

Donna graduated from West Union High School in 1947.

On July 22, 1951, she was united in marriage with Dwaine Arthur "Bud" Brockmeyer at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado. They became the parents of three children.

Following their marriage, the couple made their home in New Jersey while Bud served in the U.S. Air Force. The Brockmeyers returned to West Union in 1955, later moving to Postville and then to Calmar.

Donna worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell in West Union for several years. She also served as the secretary at Calmar Lutheran Church and worked for a number of years at the Calmar Courier newspaper.

A very active member of Calmar Lutheran Church, Donna served her congregation in many ways, including as a member of WELCA, a Luther League sponsor, and as a member of the church council.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud, on Dec. 15, 1987; a sister, Jeanette Vagts; and a brother, Howard Pape.

She is survived by three children, Denise (Michael) Halse of Postville, Candace Brockmeyer of Elkader, and Alan (Lisa) Brockmeyer of Calmar; two grandsons; three stepgrandchildren; and a great-granddaughter;

Additional survivors include a sister, Kathleen Traeger of Hawkeye; and two brothers, Donald (Kay) Pape of Sun City, Ariz., and Daryl (Marilyn) Pape of Hawkeye; nieces, nephews, and numerous other relatives.
