Howard Edwin Russler, son of Christ Russler and Anna (Reichel) Russler, was born September 23, 1916, at Fredericksburg, Iowa. He became a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Batism on October 22, 1916, at St. Paul's in Fredericksburg, Iowa, and was confirmed on July 13, 1930, at Trinity Lutheran in Hawkeye, Iowa. Howard attended and graduated from Hawkeye School in 1935.

On July 29, 1941, Howard was united in marriage to Irene Mae Fels at Fayette, Iowa. To this union were born four children: Karen, Dennis, David, and Terry.

Howard served in the US Navy in the 17th NAVALCONST.BATT. (Seabees) from May 8, 1942, to October 23, 194. He served in Gaum, Newfoundland, and Saipan.

Howard was a carpenter by trade and during the couples life together they lived in Hawkeye and West Union. Howard belonged to the American Legion and received his 50 year membership pin. He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran at Hawkeye and at the time of his death Howard was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in West Union.

Howard died Thursday, June 6, 1996, at the Palmer Lutheran Hospital at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christ and Anna (Reichel) Russler.

Howard is survived by his wife, Irene; a daughter and son in law, Karen and Don Henniges of Denver, Iowa; son and daughter in law, Dennis and Kathy Russler of Burnsville, Minnesota; son and daughter in law, David and Donna Russler of Downer's Grove, Illinois; and son and daughter in law, Terry and Paula Russler of West Uion.

He is also surved by two sisters, Luella Hummel of Allison, Iowa, and Hazel Pleggenkuhle of Hawkeye, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
