Virgil Leland Miles

Services were held on June 13 for Virgil Leland Miles, 88. Virgil died Saturday, June 9, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following a brief illness.

He was born in Strawberry Point at the home of his parents, Claude and Mamie (Farmer) Miles July 1, 1918. He attended country school near Strawberry Point and graduated from Volga High School.

He married Elna Robinson Feb.22, 1941, at the First Baptist Church in Oelwein. They had five children. For many years they farmed in the Volga and Elgin areas. Later, they both worked for Schori and Kuster Lumber Company before starting their own construction company known as Virgel Construction Co.

They enjoyed making and selling crafts during their retirement years. They loved spending time with their grandchildren. Their hobbies included fishing, playing cards and dancing. Virgil was a member of the Illyria Community Church since moving to the Elgin area. He also served as mayor of Elgin for a few years.

Virgil is survived by his son, Larry and his wife, Marcia, Elgin; two daughters, Marilyn (Norm) Leeman, Postville and Julie (Rick) Myott, Oelwein; a son-in-law, Clair Clubine of Dunkerton; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Miles of Madison, Wis.; fourteen grandchildren, Sherri (Miles) Imoehl, Kristi (Miles) Schoultz, Lisa (Clubine) Lehms, Janice (Clubine) Steinbronn, Jennifer (Clubine) Nagel, Melissa (Clubine) Christians, Danica (Clubine) Finck, Jason Miles, Amy (Miles) Cochems, Chris Leeman, Matt Leeman, Lindsey Myott, Lauren Myott and Logan Myott; eighteen great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Iva Flower and Arlene Robinson of Oelwein; a brother-in-law, George Robinson of Oelwein and his "special" family of residents at Eagle Ridge Care Center, rural Elgin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elna; one daughter, Ann Clubine; one son, Randy; one great-granddaughter and his sister, Ilo.
