Martin Frederick "Zach" Zacharias of Veneta died May 6, 2000 at age 80. He was born July 1, 1919 in Tripoli, Iowa to Herman and Viola Nordoff Zacharias. he moved to Oelwein, Iowa at age 3. He married Kathleen Houser at Maynard, Iowa Dec. 28, 1940. They were married for 48 years. During World War II, he served in the Navy.

Zacharias worked at Red Star Oil Co. before retiring. He lived in Oelwein, Iowa for 47 years where he was a member and past president of the chamber of commerce. He moved to Veneta 30 years ago. His interests included tinkering, fishing, horses and flying. He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Veneta.

Survivors include two sons, Mark and John, both of Eugene; two sister, Joy Berggren of Little Rock, Ark. and Violet Neve of Antioch, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held May 10 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Eugene. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene was in charge of arrangements.
