Judy Ann Gross, of West Union, passed away Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at her home. She was 59.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. The Reverend Dave L. Lenth officiated. Special music was provided by the organist, Marlys Hager. The honorary casket bearers were Craig and Linda Mundt, Kerwin and Marlys Anderson, and Dennis and Sarina Chapman. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery at Luana at a later date. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Judy Ann Gross was born March 19, 1947, at Postville, Iowa, to Harlan A. and LaVerda L. (Nuehring) Welzel.

She was baptized May 18, 1947 in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, Iowa and confirmed March 26, 1961, in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, Iowa. Judy attended the Eldorado Elementary School and graduated from the West Union High School. She was employed as a stenographer at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids from 1965 to 1967.

On Oct. 28, 1967 Judy was married to Reginald H. Gross in St. Peter Lutheran Church at Eldorado. To this union two sons were born. They lived on a farm on highway 56 for two years and then moved to Bellevue, Neb., while her husband was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base. They returned to the farm on highway 56 in 1976. From 1985 to 1992, they lived on a dairy farm near Winona, Minn.

Judy worked as the secretary at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia for several years. She moved to Ossian in 1991 and was employed as a Cashier at the Luther College Oneota Coffee Shop. In 1994, she was a secretary at the Citizens State Agency in Postville. Judy purchased a home in West Union in 2001.

In high school, Judy was involved in 4-H, FHA, and Chorus. She held offices in her church and was involved in teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She served as Secretary at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia from 1985 to 1992, and was the Treasurer for the Women of the ELCA from 1997 to 1999.

Judy's friends were very important to her throughout the difficult times of her life, especially at the time following her car accident in 1992, in which she was severely injured. Judy also enjoyed time with her family and liked to spend time shopping for them.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Susan, who died in infancy.

Surviving are her family, including two sons, Robert John (Amy) Gross, of Spring Grove, Minn, and Michael Regan (Molly) Gross, of Independence; one granddaughter, Kaitlyn Renae Gross; her parents, Harlan and LaVerda Welzel; and other relatives and many friends.
