Sutter, Louis, proprietor of the Elgin House; born in Baden, Germany, August 4, 1831; came to Cincinnati, Ohio in April, 1854; in August of the same year, went to Marysville, Kentucky; remained there only a short time; then went to Albany, Indiana, where he remained seven months; in the Spring of 1855 he came to Dubuque, Iowa; during that year and in 1856, went to McGregor, Cedar Falls and Chicago; in the Winter of 1856, he returned to Dubuque; then went to St. Louis, Davenport, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; engaged in blacksmithing seven years, farming three years; 1859 he came to Elgin; commenced the hotel business in 1870; he owns twenty-eight acres in Section 14, this township. He was Town Trustee two years, member of the School Board two years and Road Supervisor several years. He married Anna Zahaiske Jan. 29, 1860; she was born in Austria; they have six children -- Louisa, Emily, Marion, Frankie, Alfred and Clara.
