J. J. Berkey, attorney at law; office in Berkey's building, Vine Street, opposite public square; residence on Jones Street; was born in Holmes County, Ohio, August 3, 1833; moved to McLean County, Illinois, in 1852; came to West Union in October, 1855. He was engaged in mercantile business here until 1858; studied law with Hon. Milo McGlathery, and was admitted to the bar in 1860. Entered the Army, in August, 1862, as First Lieutenant of Company A, 38th I. V. I.; was promoted to Captainey of the company in July, 1863; mustered out in January, 1865. He has been Mayor of this city two terms, 1873 and 1874. Married Mary A. Merihugh, in 1856; she was born in St. Lawrence County, New York; they had two children - one died in infancy; one son now living - Lewis C., born September 8, 1857.
