Henry Travis Maynard was born in Winchester County, New York, February 18, 1816. The first 29 years of his life were spent in Chenango County, New York. In 1838 he was united in marriage to Charity Rosa. They had four children, Schuyler, Hester Ann wife of S. T. Barnes, Edwin who died when he was 2 years old and Gustavus.
In 1845 he brought his family to Belvidere, Illinois. Two years later his wife died leaving three small children. On September 23, 1849 he married Amelia Greene. They had eight children, Ellen wife of Col. Brown, Fannie wife of Emery Frost, Adelia, wife of Dorr Godfrey, Henry, Emmer (F), John, William and Clarion. William died at age 10 years and Clarion at age 1 1/2 of diphtheria. The three youngest children were born in Maynard.
In 1851 the Maynards came to Fayette County, Iowa, and he was the first to enter a claim to land in Harlan township. Mr. Maynard served in various public offices, township and county.
When about 25 years of age, Mr. Maynard united with the Baptist Church in Chenango County, New York. He later transferred his membership to a Baptist church in Belvidere, Illinois and subsequently to the Presbyterian church in Maynard. Of the eight living children of Mr. Maynard all were with him during his last illness except Mrs. Adelia Godfrey, who lived in the state of Washington. Mr. Henry Maynard, Sr. died in Maynard March 8, 1903, at the age of 87 years and was buried in the Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard.
