Smith, Whitman, farmer, Section 25; PO Eden; born in Saratoga Co., New York in 1804. Married Phoebe A. Niles in 1844; she was born in Steuben Co., New York in 1824; have eight children living --- Eugene, Eli, Allice, Ellen, Emma, LaFayette, Seward, Henry D.; lost one child -- Dora. Came to this county in 1854 and settled on his present estate of 180 acres, his son Eli, adjoining his farm with eighty acres, valued at $25 per acre. Is one of the earliest settlers, living in the school house until he had erected a humble habitation for his home. Has experienced all the hardships of early pioneer life.
