An Aged Pioneer Passes Away
Last Friday [July 23, 1909] afternoon about one o’clock, Mr. [Lars] Nelson, one of our old and respected pioneers, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Olson, near Halfa. He had not been enjoying his health for the past ten months and has been bedfast nearly all of the time. He has been a resident of this vicinity for the past twenty-two years and leaves one son and four daughters besides a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and friends who will mourn him. He was born in Norway on August 12, 1811, and therefore would have been 99 years old his next birthday. He came to this country to reside about sixty years ago, settling in Wisconsin, and also saw that country as well as this in its pioneer days.

The funeral services, which were in charge of Rev. Strand, of Wallingford, were held at the Andrew Olson home, his daughter, at 1 o’clock and at St. John’s church, east of town, at 2 o’clock. The interment was made in the High Lake cemetery. Thus passed another of our pioneers. – Ringsted Dispatch (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 28, 1909 / Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 28, 1909)
