Obituary of Mrs. Betsey Peterson

Mrs. Betsey Brujeld (Peterson) was born March 26, 1836, at Balestrand, Sogn, Norway. Here she was baptized and confirmed, came to America 1857, 21 years old. Came first to Madison, Wisconsin. She was united in holy wedlock to Nels Peterson Brujeld in 1860 the 24th day of June, Rev. Preus performing the marriage. This union was blessed with six children, two girls and four boys of which four have passed away some years ago, viz., Gerty, Gertrude, Peter and George. Mr. and Mrs. Nels Peterson came to Emmet county near Wallingford year 1860. They were the first Norwegian settlers that came to this county of Norwegian descent. Mr. and Mrs. Nels Peterson settled on the Riverside farm close to the church which was built later on a parcel of ground donated by Mrs. Peterson. The husband, Nels Peterson, served in the Civil war under General Sherman and belonged to Company 2 of Iowa. After the service in the war Mr. Peterson was never well and passed away May 3rd, 1873, leaving Mrs. Betsey Peterson to struggle along with the farm and the children the best she could. Mrs. Peterson has experienced some hard and strenuous days in her life of sorrow and bereavement. The four last years Mrs. Peterson has been ailing and the two last years has had to keep to her bed. May 5th, she passed away quietly at the age of 88 years, one month and ten days. Those left to mourn the loss of a dear mother are Peter N. Brujeld, Ole N. Brujeld of Washington and five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the house and the church May 8th. A good host of friends, relatives and neighbors had met to pay this old pioneer her last respects.

Pall bearers were Oliver Refsell, Halvor Egertson, L. L. Gunderson, Edwin Osher, James Refsell and E. E. Ellefson.

Rev. T. Hansen conducted the funeral service. The choir sang some beautiful songs. One more of our dear old pioneers has passed away from our midst. We cherish their memory and may God grant that when our early life here is over we may be ushered in to the Eternal home of Glory above.
