Mrs. Halvor Peterson Dies at 74

Mrs. Halvor (Emma) Peterson, 74, died Saturday afternoon [Jan. 5, 1963] of a liver ailment at Holy Family Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past two months and had been hospitalized since Dec. 10.

The former Emma Caroline Fossum was born March 6, 1888, on a farm near Wallingford and she received her education in the country school near Wallingford and the Madison Normal School at Madison, S. D. Mrs. Peterson lived her whole life in Emmet County except three years when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Fossum, lived in Arkansas.

She was married to Halvor H. Peterson on Feb. 5, 1914, at her parent's home in Wallingford. Mrs. Peterson taught school for several years in rural Emmet County until her marriage when she and her husband moved to his farm southeast of Gruver. Mr. Peterson died Dec. 8, 1932, but she continued to live on the farm until 1942 when she moved to Estherville. Five years ago she fell and suffered a broken hip and since that time she has lived at the good Samaritan Home in Estherville.

Mrs. Peterson was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church and while living south of Gruver she was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church there.

She is survived by one brother, Arthur Fossum, Estherville, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Estherville Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roy Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Wallingford.

Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese funeral Home today at until 11 a.m. tomorrow at which time the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be Laurence Hanson, Lewis Aanonson, Jacob Jacobson, Jamie Kasa, Orville Gjerde, and Palmer Paulson. Eldon Aanonson, Sylvester Berge, Lloyd Handeland and Edgar Iverson will sing "Have Thine Own Way." Mrs. Robert Fenrich will be the organist.
