Gustav W. Gilbertson was born May 20th, 1856, at Waterville, Allamakee County, Iowa. Here at this place he was baptized in the Lutheran church. At the age of 12 years [he with] his parents moved to Emmet County, where they lived for one year and then moved to Dickinson county where he grew to manhood. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church and faith at Estherville, Iowa by Rev. Handa. January 5, 1882, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Bell Rierson of High Lake township. Rev. M. C. Holseth, now of Minneapolis, performed the marriage. This union was blest with five children, three girls and two boys. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbertson moved to Rock County, Minn., for about a year after their marriage and then back to Dickinson county for about three years. Thirty-six years ago they bought the farm in High Lake township, one mile east of the Immanuel church where they have lived since. Mr. Gilbertson has been failing in health for some time and about six weeks ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis but recover somewhat from this attack. March 19th he suffered a second stroke which brought about his death. He was at the time of his death 72 years and 10 months old. He passed to the Beyond Monday morning, March 19th [1928]. Those to mourn the loss of a dear husband, father, grandfather and brother are the wife, Bell Gilbertson, and daughters, Mrs. Minnie Olson and Lillian Gilbertson who stay at home with their mother, and sons, Henry of Long Prairie, Minn., and Arthur of Hinckley, Minn. One of the daughters, namely Mrs. Albert Wolden preceded her father in death about eight years ago. There are also five grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. J. E. Johnson of Dell Rapids, S. Dak., three brothers, Albert of DeSmit, S. Dak., Charley of Jasper, Minn., and Henry of Langby, Minn.
Funeral services were held from the home and the Immanuel Church on Friday afternoon. Mr. Chas. Anderson, funeral director, and Rev. T. Hansen, conducting the funeral services assisted by Rev. Mathre of Estherville. Pall bearers were Edward N. Iverson, A. J. Anderson, John Hanson, Lewis S. Berge, Amos R. Hanson and P. G. Paulson. He was laid to rest at the Wallingford Lutheran cemetery where his body will rest until resurrection morning. Mr. Gilbertson was a member of the Immanuel congregation from the time he moved to High Lake township thirty-six years ago and a faithful church goer.
